Queer Media 101 (Part 2-AutoStraddle)
So Riese and co. revamped this website a few months ago and it is pretty much amazing. I like the way it’s accessible and very nice in terms of graphic design. The articles are a little bit more focused to a distinct audience than afterellen; it’s a little more hipster, a little less mainstream. (If that can be said about queer websites.) They are based in NYC and that is kind of fun.
Check out: Girl-on-Gallery, Daily Fix, Interviews, Haviland Stillwell (hot!)
Also noteworthy:
This Girl Called Automatic Win is Riese’s personal blog (It’s all over the place, but very funny. Watch some of her YouTube videos with Haviland. In fact, watch anything with Haviland.)
Tip: Sometimes people think queer women have no style. Absolutely untrue. Fashion is one of the best things a baby dyke can interpret when building up her gaydar. Thumb rings, leather wrist cuffs and the like are very much indicators that your crush is perhaps queer. Look out for the harder-to-spot stuff too though. A femme-y gal might wear some baggy jeans more often than her straight friend. Some gay girls are extremely meticulous about their wardrobe and don’t like to leave everything on the surface. If all else fails, shake her hand. Firm handshake adds 10 Gay Points. (Btdubs, the Gay Points are arbitrary, people can gain or lose points at will and it is fluid. Think of them as increments on your gaydar. Also, “gay” means queer in this context.)
